Set up protection before you need it
Your phone may hold your inbox, mobile-money access and authentication codes. Use a strong screen-lock PIN or password, enable a short automatic lock and hide sensitive notification previews. Keep its operating system supported and updated.
Review apps and permissions
Install apps from official stores or a verified provider. Treat APK files sent in chats as untrusted.
Give camera, microphone, location and contacts access only when needed. Remove apps you no longer use.
Be especially cautious about accessibility access, device-administrator permissions, configuration profiles and remote-control tools.
Set up the manufacturer's official device-location tools and learn their lost-device process.
Back up important data and keep account recovery codes separately.
If your phone is lost or stolen
Use a trusted device to activate the official lost-device lock. Do not attempt a dangerous recovery based on a map location.
Contact your mobile network to secure the SIM and your financial providers to protect affected services.
Secure your main email and revoke the lost device's account sessions.
Keep the device identifier, purchase details and a timeline for the provider or police. Share location evidence privately with appropriate authorities.
Consider remote erasure if recovery is unlikely. Read the vendor's instructions first: it can affect location tracking and erase data that was not backed up.
Watch for a follow-up scam
A thief may send a message claiming your phone has been found and link to a fake account page. Use the manufacturer's app or known site directly. Never remove a lost device from theft-protection features simply because a stranger asks.
Before lending, selling or recycling
Use a guest or restricted mode where available. Before disposal, verify your backup, remove SIM and memory cards, sign out according to the manufacturer's transfer instructions and perform a factory reset. Follow workplace procedures for managed phones.
