Why updates deserve attention

Updates can repair security weaknesses as well as improve features. A device may look and work normally while running vulnerable software. Updating one app does not update the operating system or everything else installed.

Turn on automatic updates

  1. Open your device's settings and check the operating-system update section. Enable automatic security updates where supported.

  2. Enable app updates in the official app store. Check separately installed programs through their own official update tools.

  3. Keep your browser and extensions updated. Restart them when an update requires it.

  4. Check router firmware and smart-device updates through the manufacturer's official instructions.

  5. Allow enough battery, storage and connectivity. Restart the device when prompted to complete installation.

Plan around data and downtime

If connectivity is limited, use a trusted connection and schedule large downloads when practical. Prioritise security updates. Back up important files before a major upgrade, and check that essential apps remain supported. For work-managed devices, follow your organisation's update process.

Spot a fake update

A web page claiming to have scanned your whole phone is not a trusted update tool. Close unexpected pop-ups. Do not install a browser extension, APK or remote-support app because an advert says you must. Start updates from the device settings, official store or vendor's verified site.

If updates fail or support has ended

Check storage, power and the vendor's troubleshooting guidance. Do not download an unofficial “patch”. When a device no longer receives security fixes, plan to replace it or move to a supported system; avoid using it for sensitive accounts. Resetting a device does not restore discontinued security support.
